Portraits from Far Rockaway #2
The Medina is an enormous walled in market place located in the heart of Marrakech. Rolling through its gates you immediately feel as if you have stepped 200 years back in time. The Market place is filled with snake charmers, spice souks, shop keepers, textiles, donkey drawn carts and the occasional baboon. With all of the commotion you’d hardly think a skateboard would garner any attention but Marrakech seemed to have a special affinity for them. Everywhere we went we were greeted with the smiles and friendly requests of children and grown men alike who wanted to give it a try. After trying to let everyone have their turn and giving out some polaroids we left with the refreshed perspective of how often carrying a skateboard and/or a camera can diffuse the language barrier and give people common ground.
California Wives debut album “Art History” releases September 4th through Vagrant Records. They debuted Art History’s first single ‘Purple’ last month, and its forthcoming video will be premiered as a commercial on September 6 during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. I shot some photos of the band for Vagrant while they were recording the album in NYC. Here is one of our favorites.
